Throwback to the 90s! Games, Crafts and Recipes That Will Take Children Back in Time

This term, let your children step back in time and relive the magic of the 90s!

The 90s were an era filled with big moments, and we’re here to bring that excitement to your children. Whether it’s introducing your children to classic playground games, crafting fun DIY projects, or whipping up some iconic 90s snacks, we’ve got you covered.

For over 30 years, OSHC by Camp Australia has been dedicated to providing exceptional after-school care for children in Australia. With decades of experience, we are committed to building safe, fun, and enriching environments for children.

To celebrate three decades of excellence, we are organising a 30-year throwback to the 90s! In Term 3, 2024, children will experience the 90s that their mum and dad grew up in. We are bringing back games, crafts, classroom decorations, and recipes that defined a generation.

This term, let children make memories, old-school style. Read our blog post to learn more about what we have planned to celebrate the best of the 90s!

Games

This term at Your OSHC, we’re excited to bring the timeless joy of 90s playground games to today’s children. These games are more than just fun; they foster teamwork, strategic thinking, and physical activity.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the exciting activities we have planned:

Twister

A classic game of balance and flexibility, Twister challenges children to place their hands and feet on coloured spots on a mat, contorting their bodies in amusing ways. It’s a fantastic way to improve coordination and have a lot of laughs with their friends.

Hide & Seek (44 Home)

Also known as 44 Home, this game is a blend of strategy and stealth. One player shuts their eyes and counts to 44 while the others hide. Once the player has finished counting, they shout “44 home!” and try to find the others before they make it back to the base. If someone is tagged, they’re the next person to count.

It’s a great way for children to use their memory and develop their problem-solving skills, while enjoying the thrill of the chase.

Musical Chairs

A game of anticipation and quick reflexes, Musical Chairs involves children walking around a circle of chairs while music plays. When the music stops, they must find a chair to sit in—one chair fewer than the number of players.

It’s a fantastic activity that teaches children the value of focusing and strategy while fostering a sportsman spirit.

It’s a great way for children to use their memory and develop their problem-solving skills, while enjoying the thrill of the chase.

Limbo

In this game, children take turns leaning backward and attempting to pass under a horizontal bar without touching it. The bar is gradually lowered, making the game more challenging. Limbo is excellent for flexibility and encourages children to test their limits in a fun environment.

By reviving these beloved 90s playground games, our after-school program not only offers a break from screen time but also promotes physical activity, social interaction, and endless fun. Let children experience the joy of these classic games in a fresh, modern setting.

Crafts

Along with games and activities, Your OSHC nurtures creativity and artistic expression. And what better way to do this than by bringing back some hands-on projects from the 90s?

These arts and crafts projects not only provide a creative outlet for children but also enhance their fine motor skills, patience, and ability to follow instructions. Here’s a preview of some of the exciting craft activities we have planned:

Paper Mache Sculptures

This classic activity involves using paper strips and glue to create sculptures. Children can mould the paper mache into various shapes and objects, then paint and decorate their creations once they dry.

Paper mache sculptures encourage creativity, improves hand-eye coordination, and results in a unique piece of art that each child can proudly display.

Tie-Dye

A true throwback, tie-dye clothing have been loved by generations. A vibrant and fun activity, tie-dyeing allows children to create their own colourful, custom-designed clothing and t-shirts.

Using a variety of dye colours and different tying techniques, each child can produce a one-of-a-kind item that reflects their personal style.

Tie-dye not only teaches the basics of colour mixing and patterns but also results in a wearable work of art.

Tie Dye Hats

Friendship Bracelets

Making friendship bracelets is a timeless and wonderful way for children to develop their dexterity and learn about patterns.

Using threads, colourful beads, and simple knotting techniques, children can create beautiful bracelets to wear and share with friends. This activity fosters a sense of accomplishment and is a great way to build lasting bonds among classmates.

Stained Glass

In this creative project, children will use tissue paper and glue to mimic the appearance of stained glass. By layering colourful tissue paper on clear plastic or wax paper, they can design intricate and vibrant pieces of art that look stunning when held up to the light.

Making stained glass enhances fine motor skills and encourages attention to detail while allowing children to explore their artistic talents.

Recipes

A throwback to the 90s is incomplete without classic treats. Offering a taste from the past and encouraging our budding chefs, these simple recipes are a fun way for children to learn about cooking and baking.

It won’t be long before they are making their own snacks. Here’s a quick look at what’s on our menu:

Fairy Bread

A simple yet magical treat, Fairy Bread consists of buttered bread topped with colourful sprinkles. This snack is not only adorable to look at, but also easy for children to make themselves.

It’s a delightful way to introduce children to the joys of cooking and add a touch of fun to their snack time.

Jelly Cups

Jelly Cups are a refreshing dessert made from flavoured gelatin, often layered with fruit or topped with whipped cream. Children will love the wobbly texture and the burst of flavours.

This easy-to-make treat teaches children about the science of gelatin setting and allows for creative variations with different flavours and add-ins.

Jelly Cups

ANZAC Biscuits

These iconic Australian cookies are made from oats, coconut, golden syrup, and butter.

ANZAC Biscuits are not only delicious but also packed with historical significance, as they were originally made to send to soldiers during World War I.

These biscuits introduce children to the basics of measuring ingredients and baking. They also emphasise the importance of tradition while providing a tasty, healthy snack.

Lamingtons

Lamingtons are sponge cakes dipped in chocolate icing and rolled in desiccated coconut, often with a layer of jam or cream in the middle.

This classic treat is a bit more involved, but the results are well worth the effort. Making Lamingtons helps children develop their baking skills and rewards them with a fluffy cake that’s perfect for sharing.
