The weather may get colder but winter doesn’t mean slowing down. At Camp Australia, we take the chill and turn it into thrills with our winter programs for kids. They’re packed with movement, laughter and connection, so that every child can get involved in the winter fun.
Whether it’s active indoor relays or bracing outdoor team games, we’ve got something for every primary schooler this winter.
Why Staying Active on Colder Days Matters
Staying active during the colder days is a good way to beat the winter chills. But the benefits go far beyond just keeping warm.
Let’s look at some of these primary school winter fun activities in a little more detail:
Physical benefits of movement in cool weather
When temperatures drop, staying active becomes even more important. Movement helps keep children active, which is one way to boost those feel-good feelings during cooler weather. Whether it’s jumping, running or stretching, these activities make physical wellbeing fun even on the coldest days.
Social and teamwork gains through group play
Games aren’t just about getting the heart rate up. They can build friendships, boost confidence and help children develop vital communication skills. Group play, especially when it involves team challenges in winter, encourages empathy, collaboration and lots of laughs along the way.
Top 10 Colder-Day Games to Try
Here are some ideas you can try at home, to get your child moving during the colder months. These winter movement ideas are proven crowd favourites. Let us know which of these activities end up being your child’s go-to activity.
Games 1–5: Indoor relays, obstacle courses & dance-offs
Snowball Scoop Relay
Using cotton balls and spoons, kids race to transfer “snowballs” across the room. It’s simple, silly and always a hit.
Cosy Corners Obstacle Course
Use cushions, hula hoops and tunnels to create a safe indoor course. Add timers for a friendly challenge. The more twists and turns, the better!
Winter Freeze Dance
Crank up the music, play winter-themed tracks and freeze when the music stops. Add costumes for bonus fun. You can even enjoy this dance game anytime, for year-round winter play.
Indoor Penguin Shuffle
Children walk like penguins in teams while balancing beanbags. It’s great for coordination and giggles. Children love the chance to waddle like penguins! This one’s always a crowd favourite and full of laughter.
Snowstorm Scavenger Hunt
Hide themed objects like mittens or snowflakes around the room and send kids on a timed hunt.
These indoor winter relays are easy to set up with everyday items, making them a winner for all children and easy for parents and guardians to create.
Games 6–10: Outdoor “chill-themed” races & team challenges
Blizzard Ball
A twist on dodgeball using soft white balls to mimic snow. Teams must dodge, weave and score.
Icicle Tag
One child is “it” and when tagged, players must freeze like icicles. Friends can “melt” them with a high-five.
Frosty Footy Drills
Basic soccer drills with a wintry twist. Try using a silver or “icy” ball for added fun.
Team Sled Pulls (No Snow Needed!)
Use mats or cardboard as sleds on grass. Teams pull their mates across set zones. Expect high energy and team spirit.
Yeti Tracks Relay
Make oversized “feet” from cardboard. Kids step into the shoes of a snow monster and race to the finish line.
These outdoor cold-weather games encourage participation, movement and loads of imaginative play.
Adapting Games for Any Space
Turning hallways into mini-tracks
Even narrow spaces can turn into active zones. Hallways make great relay lanes or movement corridors. Think running on the spot between door frames or quick shuttle challenges using soft props.
Everyday items as game props
Scarves become goal lines. Chairs make great tunnel frames. Paper plates double as skates for sliding challenges. It’s all about creativity. These are perfect, easy active winter games for all children to enjoy.
Warm-Up & Safety Essentials
Pre-game stretches and routines
We always begin with gentle stretches to warm muscles and prep joints. Simple routines like arm circles, jumping jacks and toe-touches get bodies moving and ready to play.
Dressing tips for cooler weather
Layers are key. Pack beanies, gloves and a good jacket. For outdoor play, waterproof shoes and long socks are great. Comfort means confidence to run, jump and explore. It also doesn’t hurt to pack a spare pair of socks, just in case.
