Why Educator mentoring is key to quality Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) programs

Dedicated Educators | Camp Australia

A recent report published by The Sector reflects what we experience every day at Camp Australia. Mentoring is one of the most powerful ways to build Educator confidence, help them grow, and deliver meaningful outcomes for children.

When Educators feel supported, they stay. They create safe, welcoming environments where children feel they belong. Mentoring is not an initiative for us; it is part of who we are. It shapes how we deliver quality Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) across Australia.

Starting with support
Every Educator’s journey begins with ‘Arrive and Thrive’, a flexible onboarding program designed to build confidence from day one. Through face-to-face training, virtual workshops, and self-paced learning, new team members gain the tools they need to succeed. They are guided by a Service Leader, a buddy system, and shadow shifts that ease the transition into their role.

No Educator is left to navigate it alone.

A network of support
Mentoring does not stop after induction. Every Educator is connected to a dedicated network of specialists who provide day-to-day guidance and long-term career support. From Learning and Development partners to Regional Managers and Child Wellbeing Officers, this network ensures no one feels isolated.

Our focus is on creating a culture where feedback, coaching, and shared learning are part of everyday practice. This is how we build strong teams that become trusted members of their school communities.

Learning never stops
Continuous learning is a cornerstone of our approach. Every Educator has access to flexible development pathways tailored to their needs and career goals. This includes essential training in child safety and wellbeing, as well as advanced modules in behaviour support and inclusive practice.

We partner with leading experts and organisations to ensure our programs stay relevant and impactful. This equips our teams with the skills and confidence to support every child, no matter their individual needs.

Building leaders of tomorrow
For Educators ready to take the next step, our Aspiring Leader Program provides a structured six-month pathway into leadership. This is a guided journey that blends practical projects, leadership workshops, and one-on-one mentorship.

Mentoring in this program is a dynamic, two-way relationship. Experienced leaders share insights and guidance, while mentees bring their aspirations, energy, and fresh perspectives.

The benefits go beyond skills. Mentoring builds connection, expands networks, and fosters a deeper sense of belonging and purpose. It is also a growth opportunity for mentors, who gain valuable experience by nurturing the next generation of leaders.

Why mentoring matters
Mentoring is not a buzzword at Camp Australia. It is how we build confident Educators. It is how we deliver quality care. Most importantly, it is how we create environments where children feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn.

When we support our Educators, they give their best to children, families, and school communities. That is the Camp Australia difference.
